Home Learning Daily video 19 December 2020

In the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many education institutions round the world to rapidly switch to remote learning. Although some activities were brought back to campuses within the autumn, many classes at these institutions are still in hybrid or online form and appear likely to stay this manner for a few time. this example begs two important questions: Has the transition to online teaching negatively affected student learning? And if so, how can we ameliorate these effects?

Previous research suggests that online classes are often even as effective as in-person classes, with student learning measured in terms of grades, teacher perceptions of learning, and student perceptions of learning (Swan 2003). However, this claim isn't uncontested. for instance , Xu and Jaggars (2014) observe that findings that online and in-person instruction yield similar learning outcomes have mostly been from studies conducted at elite institutions and appear to not generalise to community colleges. Furthermore, they find that certain demographic groups – students who are male, Black, younger, or have lower mark Averages (GPAs) – perform relatively worse when taking online courses.

If there are pre-existing differences in performance in online classes, these might be exacerbated by the pandemic forcing classes to be taught remotely. for instance , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to become ill and die from COVID-19. The factors behind disproportionate morbidity effects might create disproportionate stress on students from these demographic groups. One may additionally worry that when institutions went online, many students who were already disadvantaged returned to environments with relatively fewer resources to support learning, thus putting them at an extra disadvantage.

The study ‘Scenario amidst COVID 19 - Onground Situations and Possible Solutions’ was conducted by child rights NGO Smile Foundation with an aim of analysing the access to technology.

The findings of the study showed that 43.99 per cent of surveyed children have access to smartphones and another 43.99 per cent of scholars have access to basic phones while 12.02 per cent don't have access to either smartphones or basic phones.

About 56 per cent of youngsters were found to possess no access to smartphones which have emerged as essential tools for online learning during the coronavirus-induced lockdown, consistent with a replacement study that surveyed 42,831 students at various school levels.

COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, hit college campuses last spring, forcing schools into pandemic intervention mode. The pandemic prompted many colleges to empty dorms, send students home and shift to online classes. because the spring 2021 semester nears, colleges have more clarity about the way to balance student expectations and COVID-19 precautions. Research by the school Crisis Initiative at Davidson College in North Carolina, which is tracking institutional COVID-19 responses, finds that almost 1,400 schools have transitioned to online instruction for the spring. Others will forge on with in-person classes. While responses vary by school, here's what students can expect from the school experience within the forthcoming spring semester.

Home Learning Daily video date 18 December 2020 std 1 to 12

The World Health Organization has declared Covid-19 as an epidemic that has posed a up to date threat to humanity. This pandemic has successfully forced global shutdown of several activities, including educational activities, and this has resulted in tremendous crisis-response migration of universities with online learning serving because the educational platform. The crisis-response migration methods of universities, faculty and students, challenges and opportunities were discussed and it's evident that online learning is different from emergency remote teaching, online learning are going to be more sustainable while instructional activities will become more hybrid provided the challenges experienced during this pandemic are well explored and transformed to opportunities.

The economic consequences of the pandemic also as local lockdowns are well-discussed and have surfaced within the gross domestic product and industrial production numbers. But there's another side to the ramifications: the shortage of skillful imparting of education may translate into an economic adversity over time.

India’s gross enrollment ratio in education was a mere 27.4 per cent for 2017-18, consistent with the All India Survey on education (AISHE). this is often not great news compared to other developing countries. things might be further battered by the possible decline in enrollment thanks to limited access to online education.

There are a couple of details that require to be addressed in such a scenario: Is online education viable? Will our ‘future of the nation’ contribute to the human capital and participate in reviving the economy?

The internet and digital infrastructure with a big penetration may be a boon for education. The Pradhan Mantri e-Vidya Programme was launched in May to amplify the efforts for a far better shift online.

The top 100 universities within the country were permitted to start out online courses in May, without the necessity to hunt approval from education regulators. States like Karnataka announced their own policies to form online education accessible.

However, challenges remain. Online education has not only changed how students are learning, but has also significantly altered the methods deployed by teachers and fogeys .

Since the COVID -19 pandemic has disrupted the traditional lifestyle of individuals across the world , the virtual world has come to the rescue. Amongst many institutions schools have also shifted their base to virtual platforms to conduct classes online. Consequently, catering to the requirements of all stages of education from pre-primary to college level, online education has emerged as an alternate to ordinary face to face classes.

Accordingly, various stakeholders like government and personal organizations try their best to help one another by sprucing up their existing online platforms, apps and providing training to teachers to use these apps and platforms to the optimum level. Moreover, efforts are being made by both government and non-government organisations and edtech companies to support the varsity system to form a smooth transition to the virtual world.

Higher Education

Many colleges that have used online platforms within the past have made a smooth transition post-COVID-19. Take, for instance , the planet University of Design (WUD), which has been performing on assimilating online learning across its courses for over a year

It is commonly accepted that the initial cost of an eLearning implementation is dear (once-off development cost), but that the value of coaching (per user) goes down exponentially as more learners use the eLearning course material.

The government has been touting online classes as a viable alternative, but unequal and patchy access to the web has meant the experience is vastly different counting on location and household income.

According to a National Sample Survey report, 90 lakh students studying within the country's government schools haven't any facility for online education. 24 percent of households are connected to the web through smartphones, and only 11 percent have a computer with an online connection, while things in rural India is worse.

Upskilling and motivating teachers, organising counselling sessions for stakeholders like teachers, parents and students are a number of the important measures taken by the administration within the recent past. Making endless effort to supply customised teaching-learning material suitable for online classes is differently of facilitating the schooling of youngsters .

The Central government has recently launched the PM e-VIDYA platform, with 12 new DTH channels, one for every class to succeed in bent all stratas of society. These efforts have proved beneficial to a large chunk of the school-going population.

On March 11, 2020, the planet Health organization declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. Following the speed with which COVID-19 spread to all or any parts of the planet , and to contain the spread of the disease, most governments round the world, including the US, authorized unprecedented social containment measures to stem the tide. These measures among others required social distancing and therefore the temporary physical closure of educational institutions. The Georgia State University School of Public Health, like all other institutions of upper learning, had to make distance-learning opportunities to enable students to finish the 2019–2020 school year . The unplanned, rapid, and unsure duration of the approach presented challenges in the least academic levels. Not much information on best practices was available to guide such abrupt transitions to school education. the aim of the study was to gather data on how the transition to distance learning impacted undergraduate and graduate students taking courses publicly health at GSU. The goal was to spot student academic challenges and therefore the unforeseen benefits of distance learning, and to use that information to tell practices which will be implemented during crises that impact university education.

The course consists of 4 modules, quizzes after each module and a final assessment.

Education institutions across the planet , including India, are pushed to work online from homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As more teachers and students coordinate classes via the web , they're constantly targeted by hackers through various sorts of malware and cyber attacks. a replacement report on Friday claims that spear-phishing attacks on Indian schools and colleges via Gmail have increased in September following a drop during the summer vacations (July-August). Spear-phishing may be a sort of personalised phishing attack that targets a selected organisation or individual, with intentions to steal data for malicious purposes.

Researchers at Barracuda also noticed that phishing attacks on educational institutes were mainly carried using two methods between July and September - email scams and repair impersonation.
