Natural Ways to Improve Oxygen Levels

Natural Ways to Improve Oxygen Levels

Remdesivir (Veklury) was the first drug approved by the FDA for treating the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is indicated for treatment of COVID-19 disease in hospitalized adults and children aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg. The broad-spectrum antiviral is a nucleotide analog prodrug.

Full approval was preceded by the US FDA issuing an EUA (emergency use authorization) on May 1, 2020 to allow prescribing remdesivir for severe COVID-19 (confirmed or suspected) in hospitalized adults and children.  Upon approval of remdesivir in adults and adolescents,

How is blood oxygen level measured?
The most efficient way to monitor blood oxygen levels is by an arterial blood gas or ABG test. For this test, a blood sample is taken from an artery, usually in the wrist. This procedure is very accurate, but it can be a little painful.

An ABG test can be difficult to do at home, so a person may wish to do an alternative test, using a small device known as a pulse oximeter.

A pulse oximeter is a small clip that is often put on a finger, although it can also be used on the ear or toe. It measures blood oxygen indirectly by light absorption through a person’s pulse.

Although the pulse oximeter test is easier, quicker, and not painful, it is not as accurate as the ABG test. This is because it can be influenced by factors such as dirty fingers, bright lights, nail polish, and poor circulation to the extremities.

Low blood oxygen levels can result in abnormal circulation and cause the following symptoms:

  • shortness of breath
  • headache
  • restlessness
  • dizziness
  • rapid breathing
  • chest pain
  • confusion
  • high blood pressure
  • lack of coordination
  • visual disorders
  • sense of euphoria
  • rapid heartbeat
  • Causes

Hypoxemia, or oxygen levels below the normal values, may be caused by:

not enough oxygen in the air
inability of the lungs to inhale and send oxygen to all cells and tissues
inability of the bloodstream to circulate to the lungs, collect oxygen, and transport it around the body

Why is this medication prescribed?

Remdesivir injection is used to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19 infection) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in hospitalized adults and children 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 88 pounds (40 kg). Remdesivir is in a class of medications called antivirals. It works by stopping the virus from spreading in the body.

Remdesivir injection may cause serious reactions during and after the infusion of the medication. A doctor or nurse will monitor you carefully while you are receiving the medication. Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms during or after the infusion: chills or shivering; nausea; vomiting; sweating; dizziness upon standing up; rash; wheezing or shortness of breath; abnormally fast or slow heartbeat; or swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes. Your doctor may need to slow down your infusion or stop your treatment if you experience these side effects.

the EUA was updated to maintain the ability for prescribers to treat pediatric patients weighing 3.5 kg to less than 40 kg or children younger than 12 years who weigh at least 3.5 kg

Remdesivir is an investigational drug being studied to treat coronavirus infection, also known as COVID-19. It has not been approved by the FDA for general use. However, the FDA is now allowing remdesivir to be used in human studies and for emergency use in certain hospitalized patients. More information should be provided by the doctor from either the Informed Consent form for a study or the FDA Fact Sheet for Patients and Parents/Caregivers for emergency use. There is limited information known about the safety and effectiveness of using remdesivir to treat COVID-19. Some study results show that remdesivir may help some patients get better sooner. The information in this document reflects preliminary and emerging data, which is evolving and subject to reassessment. Users should be aware of these considerations in their review of investigational drug data, and it is always the responsibility of treating practitioners to exercise independent judgment in making care decisions.

How should this medicine be used?

Remdesivir comes as a solution (liquid) and as a powder to be mixed with liquid and infused (injected slowly) into a vein over 30 to 120 minutes by a doctor or nurse in a hospital. It is usually given once daily for 5 to 10 days. The length of your treatment depends on how well your body responds to the medication.

Other uses for this medicine

The FDA has approved an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to allow children weighing 8 pounds (3.5 kg) to less than 88 pounds (40 kg) or children less than 12 years of age weighing at least 8 pounds (3.5 kg) who are hospitalized with severe COVID-19 to receive remdesivir.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Protect yourself and others from COVID-19

Protect yourself and others from COVID-19

If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue. Check local advice where you live and work. Do it all!

You also find out more about WHO's recommendations for getting vaccinated on our public advice page on COVID-19 vaccines.

What to do if you feel unwell
Know the full range of symptoms of COVID-19. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Other symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include loss of taste or smell, aches and pains, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, red eyes, diarrhoea, or a skin rash.

Stay home and self-isolate even if you have minor symptoms such as cough, headache, mild fever, until you recover. Call your health care provider or hotline for advice. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house or have someone near you, wear a medical mask to avoid infecting others.
If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Call by telephone first, if you can and follow the directions of your local health authority.

Keep up to date on the latest information from trusted sources, such as WHO or your local and national health authorities. Local and national authorities and public health units are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

What to do to keep yourself and others safe from COVID-19

Maintain at least a 1-metre distance between yourself and others to reduce your risk of infection when they cough, sneeze or speak. Maintain an even greater distance between yourself and others when indoors. The further away, the better.

Make wearing a mask a normal part of being around other people. The appropriate use, storage and cleaning or disposal are essential to make masks as effective as possible.

Here are the basics of how to wear a mask:

Clean your hands before you put your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.

Make sure it covers both your nose, mouth and chin.

When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask, or dispose of a medical mask in a trash bin.

Don’t use masks with valves.

How to make your environment safer

Avoid the 3Cs: spaces that are closed, crowded or involve close contact.

Outbreaks have been reported in restaurants, choir practices, fitness classes, nightclubs, offices and places of worship where people have gathered, often in crowded indoor settings where they talk loudly, shout, breathe heavily or sing.

The risks of getting COVID-19 are higher in crowded and inadequately ventilated spaces where infected people spend long periods of time together in close proximity. These environments are where the virus appears to spread by respiratory droplets or aerosols more efficiently, so taking precautions is even more important.

Meet people outside. Outdoor gatherings are safer than indoor ones, particularly if indoor spaces are small and without outdoor air coming in.

For more information on how to hold events like family gatherings, children’s football games and family occasions, read our Q&A on small public gatherings.

Avoid crowded or indoor settings but if you can’t, then take precautions:

Open a window. Increase the amount of ‘natural ventilation’ when indoors.

WHO has published Q&As on ventilation and air conditioning for both the general public and people who manage public spaces and buildings.

Wear a mask (see above for more details).

When and how will your number for corona vaccine come, what will 18+ youth have to pay?

When and how will your number for corona vaccine come, what will 18+ youth have to pay?

The vaccine will be given to all people over the age of 18 from May 1 amid the ongoing war on the corona epidemic.  The central government's decision is being called a revolutionary step.  This third phase of vaccination will begin on May 1.  In the first phase, high-risk people over the age of 45 were vaccinated.  In the second phase, all people over the age of 45 were vaccinated.  And now 18+ people have also been included in the third phase of the vaccination campaign from May 1.

1619095128009930-0

However, there is also enthusiasm among the youth and many questions in mind.  The most important question is when and how will their number come?  The government is giving free vaccines to 45+ people, but from May 1, when 18+ people will be vaccinated, will they have to pay these costs?  Experts have answered similar questions during various programs or interviews.  We are giving you the answers to all these questions together here.

1619095114432391-1

When and how will your number for the vaccine come?

Sameer Bhati, a member of the government's Vaccine Awareness Campaign Committee and director of Star Imaging and Path Labs Ltd., said in a TV program that 18 plus people are to be vaccinated from May 1 and can also register for it through the Covin web portal. You can register by logging on to https://selfregistration.cowin.gov.in/. More than 4 people can register for vaccination from a single mobile number. If you can't do that, then you can go to your nearest vaccination center and register. Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has also told about this.

Do 18+ people have to pay for the vaccine?

It is being said that 18+ young people may have to pay for the corona vaccine. Samir Bhati says that at present the situation is not very clear about its price. Guidelines on price are yet to come. This is ongoing. After this, prices will be displayed in hospitals. However, it also depends on the state governments. As Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that everyone will be vaccinated free of cost.

Can private companies also vaccinate their employees?

Such demand is coming from the corporate sector in many cities of the country, including Mumbai. According to Dr. Hemant Thakkar of Bridge Candy Hospital, Mumbai, earlier the government had complete control over production and distribution, but now it is being relaxed. The government has made it clear that companies will give 50 per cent of the vaccine production to the central government and can sell the remaining 50 per cent in the market. State governments can also demand directly from companies. In such a situation, it is likely that private companies may also run a parallel vaccination drive for their workers with the help of nursing homes or private hospitals. That is also important.

Are we lagging behind in vaccination compared to the pace of transition?

According to experts, there was little problem with the supply of vaccines. But now the situation is going to improve. Production is running for about 85 million people, while 13 million are needed by July. To bridge this gap, the central government has asked indigenous companies making Kovishield and Kovacasin, Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech to provide additional funds. In addition to Kovacacin and Covishield, the Sputnik V vaccine will also be coming soon. There are also WHO approved Moder Pfizer etc. from abroad. They can also be made available through the fasttrack system in India.
